  MATTHEW'S GOSPEL
A QUICK INTRODUCTION

Matthew's Gospel is probably the best known and the most quoted of all the books that have ever been written about Jesus. That is one reason why Matthew was placed first among the four Gospels.

Matthew wanted to give the people of his time a record of Jesus's message and ministry. He had a special interest in showing how the coming of Jesus fulfilled the expectations of the Jewish people in the Old Testament for a Messiah. Matthew showed his Jewish readers that faith in Jesus was quite natural for any Jew, as Jesus' life and teaching came from deep Jewish roots.

Matthew paints a striking picture of Jesus as the great teacher, telling the people, with charisma and authority, the real meaning of the Old Testament law. One of the most famous passages in all the Gospels comes in chapters 5 to 7, where Jesus gives "the Sermon on the Mount" in Galilee. This includes Jesus's great sayings, such as...

God blesses those people who are humble.
The earth will belong to them!
God blesses those people whose hearts are pure.
They will see him!

Matthew 5:5, 8

You are like light for the whole world.
Matthew 5:14

Don’t store up treasures on earth! Moths and rust can destroy them, and thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, store up your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy them, and thieves cannot break in and steal them.
Matthew 6:19-20

Matthew ends his story with the inspiring words of Jesus to his followers, about what they should do once he has left them...

I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth! Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.
Matthew 28:18-20
