Jesus, St Paul’s and the Protestors

Unless you've been orbiting around Neptune for the last two weeks, you will probably have heard that a group of protesters have set up camp around St. Paul's Cathedral and refused to leave. The last 17 days have seen, the Cathedral go back and forth as to whether or not they should close; three members of staff resign; more back and forth-ing on the question of legal action; public outcry both from those in favour and those opposed to the occupation; with still no sign as to when the protest will end.

Earliest Known Picture of Jesus Goes on Display

What does Jesus look like when you close your eyes and picture him? Long hair and a beard? Blue eyes even? The oldest images of Jesus ever found go on display today in New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World and there's something distinctly strange about them. The pictures painted closest to the time when Jesus was alive show him with short hair, brown eyes, and, most surprising of all, beardless.

Sell Phone

It feels odd to talk about Easter in September, which is why it seems so strange that the Advertising Standards Agency have taken four and a half months to come to a conclusion about Phones4U's Easter advertising campaign.

Confession Is Good for the Soul (I’m Told)

I’ve been on a bit of a journey of discovery over these last couple of months. Do you remember my time with my friends and the stone gorilla?

Jesus and the Riots

It would probably be remiss of us not to write something on the riots, but as by now you’ve probably read or heard all the usual points made again and again, I thought I’d share something about the whole thing that’s been nagging away in the back of my mind.

The News of the Ancient World

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The journalists, headline writers and editors are often right in what they say. So you must be careful to live as if it will be your life under the microscope on tomorrow's front page. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

The Poor You Will Always Have With You?

In the last month, the Church of England's two most senior bishops have both spoken out on the issue of poverty in the UK. Rowan Williams' piece in the New Statesman grabbed all the headlines a few weeks ago, but last week also saw the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, tackling the issue in Friday's Guardian. In it he argued the need for us to stand together and recognise that individuals have value regardless of the size of their income.

Jesus Wept

It's the shortest verse in the whole Bible and occasionally some people even use it to swear, but there's no doubt that John 11:35 - "Jesus wept." - is an odd little verse. According to the gospels, by this point in his ministry Jesus has already brought two people back from the dead and seems to know that he's about to do something similar. And yet there he stands outside his friend's tomb and weeps.

Gaga for Jesus

Always keen to court controversy Lady Gaga's latest music video, has yet again won her huge amounts of free publicity by portraying her as trapped in the middle of a love triangle between Judas and Jesus. Gaga's video, which is for her latest single "Judas", was released last night racking up over 3 million votes in 24 hours.

TV Review: The Story of Jesus

Easter is always the time of year when the TV channels figure they should stick out a bit of religious programming and this year proved no exception. There was Anne Widdecombe pondering the future of Christinanity, Rowan Williams wondering about the point of forgiveness, an ITV documentary on the flight of faith and the movies The Prince of Egypt and Barabbas on the BBC and Channel 5 . But arguably the biggest piece of religious programming this year was BBC1's two-part documentary The Story of Jesus.
