TV Review: The Story of Jesus

Easter is always the time of year when the TV channels figure they should stick out a bit of religious programming and this year proved no exception. There was Anne Widdecombe pondering the future of Christinanity, Rowan Williams wondering about the point of forgiveness, an ITV documentary on the flight of faith and the movies The Prince of Egypt and Barabbas on the BBC and Channel 5 . But arguably the biggest piece of religious programming this year was BBC1's two-part documentary The Story of Jesus.

Don’t laugh, Jesus went by Donkey

Said a supposedly humorous car sticker from the 80s, and today is the day that people celebrate the memory of Jesus’ most famous road trip - his journey into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. The symbolism of Jesus’ mode of transport is largely lost on us today. Almost no-one in the west travels on animals today, let alone going by donkey, and even in the middle east donkeys tend to be used to carry goods rather than passengers.

This is compassion

It's nearly two o'clock in the morning, and I'm struggling to keep my eyelids open. I'm awake for a reason. On this night Christians remember something that happened in the small hours just before Jesus' arrest. Before the soldiers came to get him, Jesus went out to an olive garden on the edge of the city, a garden known as Gethsemane. Knowing what was about to happen, and getting very agitated, he said to his friends, "I'm hurting to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

The Passion

These pages explore this stunning retelling of the passion of Jesus in words, images and video. Originally shown over Easter 2008, this BBC drama tells the story of the final week in the life of Jesus.

Seven last sayings

{title}

Jesus hung on the cross for six hours before he died. In that time, he spoke to his friends, to the criminal crucified next to him, and to God. They are the last words he spoke before he died. These pages present Jesus' seven last sayings in seven short movies. Links to the animations are found below, links to the text are found to the right.

Mel Gibson’s Passion movie

{title}

It's been called "the most controversial film of the century" and has, like Jesus himself, drawn big crowds and raised lots of questions. These pages give you an opportunity to get close enough to the man at the centre of it all to ask some personal questions. Such as: why did Jesus suffer and die? What was his life all about? What difference does it make?

Chocolate theology

{title}

Is it a question of either or, or both and? Can we indulge in the festivities of Easter with eggs and chocolate (lots of chocolate) and still absorb the incredible gift given to us by Jesus, his death and resurrection.

Film Review: The Miracle Maker

Movie makers filming the life of Jesus have generally struggled to get the balance right between his divinity and his humanity. The earlier films, like 1927's The King of Kings, emphasised Jesus's divinity by making him remote and detached. More recent films have tried to portray a more human Jesus, but often seem to sail straight past the target. Last Temptation of Christ portrayed a Jesus who wasn't even a particularly stable human. Others were so keen to show him laughing, that he lost any sense of substance.

My Sweet Lord

Artistic images of Jesus are often controversial and Cosimo Cavallaro's latest installation "My Sweet Lord" is proving to be no exception. Having gained notoriety back in 1999 for covering a hotel room in cheese his latest piece is a sculpture of Jesus fashioned in chocolate. The exhibition, in New York's Lab Gallery opens this Sunday, just a week before Easter.
