A Christian Country?

Earlier in this week, David Cameron, addressed Anglican clergy in Oxford to celebrate the Four Hundredth Anniversary of the King James Bible. During his speech, the “committed…but vaguely practising Church of England Christian” declared once more that “we are a Christian country”. [You can read the whole speech here]. Of course, he is not the first, but I wonder what Jesus would make of his claim.

Behind the Lines

I’ve gone through quite a few interviews in my time but recently I had to be part of a panel of interviewers for a job.

I Know How You Feel

Do those words annoy you as much as they do me? Recently there seems to have been a spate of interviews and sound-bites in which Members of Parliament have asserted that they know what it is like for us. We’re all going through this recession together so they understand what it is like for everyone, whatever their circumstances.

400 Years of the King James Bible

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. It may not have been the first translation of the Bible into English, nor even the most accurate, but it has been the most influential and well-loved version of the Bible in the English-speaking world.

Film Review: The Book of Eli

Ever wondered what would happen to the Bible in a post-apocalyptic age? Denzel Washington clearly has, not only starring in The Book of Eli, but putting up much of the funding as well.

The story is set thirty plus in the future, but we’re never told when or what, exactly happened. There was a war, a flash, and now all that remains is a tiny fraction of the population and a landscape strewn with human and mechanical wreckage. Travelling through what remains of the world is Eli (Washington) who, unbeknownst to anyone, is carrying the last remaining copy of the Bible.

Lectio divina - what’s it all about?

Lectio divina (Latin for divine reading, holy reading, spiritual reading) is an ancient tradition of reading and engaging with the bible. It is a traditional Christian practice of prayer and scriptural reading that encourages a communion with the Triune God as well as promotes a spiritual connection with scripture. Lectio divina is a way of praying with Scripture that calls one to study, ponder, listen and, finally, pray from God's Word

Everyday sayings of Jesus

{title}

You'd think that the sayings of someone who lived 2,000 years ago would be stuck inside a dusty old textbook somewhere, rather than being used every day out on the street – but think again. A good number of the sayings of Jesus are used in modern English speech and continue to add colour and depth to what people say.
