William Wilberforce – by Stephen Tomkins. A new biography including primary documentation about the experience of slaves and the activities of slavers.

 

William Wilberforce – by William Hague. A life of the great anti-slave trade campaigner, by a leading politician.

 

John Newton – by Jonathan Aitken. Subtitled “from disgrace to amazing grace”, this is a new biography of Newton by a former cabinet minister.

 

Bury the Chains – by Adam Hochschild. A superbly written history of the abolition campaign. Wilberforce’s contribution is minimised, though.

 

Sacred Hunger – by Barry Unsworth. The Booker prize-winning novel set onboard an 18th century slave ship.

 

Real Christianity – by William Wilberforce. Wilberforce compares the Christianity of his day with what is taught in the Bible. Written in 1797.

 

Beloved – by Toni Morrison. This beautifully written historical novel unfolds a shocking story of the horrors of slavery.

 

Black Ivory – by James Walvin. This covers all aspects of British salvery and the slave trade, as well as abolition.
