Tom Wright, the Bishop of Durham and expert on the New Testament, has written many books which explore the life and significance of Jesus, but in Simply Christian, he has written an introduction to the Christian faith which relates to modern life. Tom writes, “my aim has been to describe what Christianity is all about, both to commend it to those outside the faith and to explain it to those inside.”

Tom Wright roots his book in the desire of people today for something more than “what you can put into a test tube or a bank account”. He sees this desire for something more in four areas of human experience: in the longing for justice, the quest for spirituality, the hunger for relationships, and the delight in beauty – all of which he calls “strange signposts pointing beyond the landscape of our contemporary culture and out into the unknown.”

Following a Christian line of argument which goes back to St Augustine in the 4th century, Tom Wright sees these four signposts as pointers to God.

Simply Christian goes on to give a very clear and engaging explanation of what Christians believe, and why there are convincing reasons to follow the Christian faith. Chapters on God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are followed later in the book by explorations of prayer, the Bible and living as a Christian. Tom portrays the Christian life as the fulfillment of the universal desire for justice, spirituality, relationships and beauty.
