Counter-cultural faithBrian McLaren is the author of several groundbreaking books about the Christian faith, and in this book he sets out to discover the essential message of Jesus, which he believes the church has often missed. “Through the years,” he says, “I have frequently had an uncomfortable feeling that the portrait of Jesus I found in the New Testament didn’t fit with the images of Jesus in the church.”
The Secret Message of Jesus introduces Jesus as a revolutionary in his own time and place. Brian McLaren explores his Jewish background and the troubled politics and religion of the time, but he quickly homes in on the powerful message of Jesus, as heard in his teaching and storytelling, and seen and felt in his miracles.
The heart of Jesus’ message is about the kingdom of God, which McLaren sees as “a revolutionary, counter-cultural movement – proclaiming a ceaseless rebellion against the tyrannical trinity of money, sex and power.” The book is therefore not just an introduction to Jesus and his message, but a passionate call to become, in McLaren’s words, “secret agents of the kingdom”.
What readers have said about the book…
“McLaren’s call is to live out the Kingdom values of helping the poor and oppressed, working toward peace and justice, and loving even our enemies.” – Penny Watkins, Book Pleasures
“This book is much more than another attempt to get us hooked on religion. Instead Mr McLaren uncovers what Jesus was about, what he stood for and what his vision for the world consisted of. Reading it with acceptance will take you to a new understanding of what it is to be human.” – Bookworm, Amazon

Jesus has probably inspired more books and biographies than anyone else in human history. But which of them are worth reading if you’re exploring the life of Jesus for the first time – or even for the second or third times?
