Don't worry

 Don’t worry

Worry has always been around. Here’s Jesus talking about it 2,000 years ago…

“Don’t worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today” (Matthew 6:34).

On the surface, what Jesus says seems simple, but in practice it is nearly impossible. Trust God, don’t worry (be happy)? Don’t worry? How can I not worry? It’s human nature to fret about what the future may bring. And yet Jesus tells us not to.

Take time to ask yourself a couple of questions. Have you ever changed anything simply by worrying about it? How often have the truly horrible things you’ve worried about actually come to pass? If you’re like most people, the answers are a) no and b) not very.

Learning to trust God with your future is tough. Few people ever manage it in this lifetime. You can, however, manage it for a few minutes a day.

Write down the things that you worry about the most. Now take a good look at your list. Are any of these people or events under your control? If so, what can you do to change them? If you can change them, do it and get it off your list. If you can’t, why are they on your list at all?

Give them to God: “Dear God, I know I can’t do anything about this, but it’s in your power, so your will be done.” Keep handing them over to God whenever they invade your thoughts.

“Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
