R father… Gzus via txt

A recent competition launched for the best version of the Lord's Prayer in text message form (er... txt msg 4m) drew a big response from mobile users. And the prayers and other sayings of Jesus which arrived were intriguing.

People not only tried to make the Lord's Prayer as short as possible, so that it would fit into the space of a single txt msg. They also got to the heart of what the prayer is all about and then put it into their own words.

Some of the txt msgs are entertaining and funny, but most of them read like real prayers and sayings of Jesus, and, of course, they're all ready to be texted to someone.

Here is one of the traditional versions of the prayer of Jesus, as it’s prayed in English around the world today…

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

This modern version of the Lord’s Prayer is taken from the Contemporary English Version…

Our Father in heaven,
help us to honour your name.
Come and set up your kingdom,
so that everyone on earth will obey you, as you are obeyed in heaven.
Give us our food for today.
Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others.
Keep us from being tempted and protect us from evil.
Matthew 6:9-13

About this module

If Jesus had been born in the 21st rather than the 1st century, would he have taught by text? Would he have got on his mobile and texted his followers to say “Luv yr NMEs”? Or told them: “UR d salt of d erth”?

There’s even a book, ‘r father n hvn’ available here.
