1. Why is Jesus important to you?
Because he is the question – to my conscience, to society, to political structures, to my relationships. He is enigmatic, unsettling, disturbing – not necessarily nice and only comforting in parts. Ultimately, he is destiny.

2. How did your faith begin?
At Sunday school, where I was taught to be horridly pious. The first religious experience of my life was hearing American evangelist Billy Graham giving it large in London. I was 13. This was Christianity, US-style. 10,000 people and a 2,000-strong choir shoe-horned into Earl’s Court. Big, bold, theatrical. Religion as theatre has intrigued me ever since.

3. Have you ever found faith hard to keep?
Some people have moments of doubt. I have moments of faith. I cling on to these.

4. What does believing in Jesus mean to your everyday life?
At first glance, not very much at all. But, the truth is, his questions niggle away at all my thoughts and actions.

5. What encouragement would you give someone looking for faith?
Your search is the key. ‘If you seek me you will find me…’ Don’t expect answers – just deeper questions, deeper meanings and be prepared to meet some wonderful fellow travellers on the same intriguing journey as you.

About this module

In these pages, we take a down-to-earth look at religious faith by asking people about their experience. Some people have a rock-solid sort of faith, while others seem to cling on by their fingernails. What’s your experience? How would you answer our five questions (see below).
