The salt of the earth
“He’s the salt of the earth,” as the saying goes. It’s like saying that someone is good, reliable and absolutely genuine.
Jesus paid this compliment to his disciples. Since salt was used at the time to purify food and bring out its flavour, he seems to be saying that his followers do something invaluable in the world they live in. Here’s how he put it…
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
