Nativity icon

{title}

An Eastern icon of the Nativity introduces us to the main characters in the cast of Christmas: Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds and angels, and the wise men. With notes, short reflections and prayers for you to follow.

Unexpected faces

{title}

Have you ever unexpectedly seen a picture in the shapes made by clouds, or a face in a pattern of dots? Some people have been taken by surprise by glimpsing the face of Jesus in wood grain, or a snowy field, or shadows.

In these pages we’re looking at some of these strange pictures and the stories behind them. Click and explore among the images on the left. If you know any other pictures or stories, email to let us know via the contact page.

Compiled and written by Simon Jenkins.

Faces of Jesus

{title}

Christians have been making images of Jesus since the early centuries of the church. In this section, we look at pictures of the face of Christ – some of them centuries old, some of them from today.

NB: If you are hoping to reproduce these images you will need to seek permission from the original copyright holders (not rejesus). Please don’t contact us looking for permission or asking for contact details for the copyright holders.

Jim Janknegt’s rich fool

{title}

Rejesus is developing a tradition of commissioning artists to produce work about Jesus. We started with photographer Lizzie Everard and then poet Jude Simpson. Now comes painter Jim Janknegt.

We’ve had our eye on Jim’s wonderful icons from gospel stories for some time and we were delighted when he agreed to our brief to paint his interpretation of The Rich Fool.

Chocolate theology

{title}

Explore the paradox of Easter - bitter then sweet, death then life, dark then light - with this visual poem, a piece of eye candy.

Design, animation and 3d chilis by Bruce Stanley.

Lizzie Everard’s blessings

image

We asked photographer Lizzie Everard to make a series of photographic images inspired by Jesus’s famous words from a passage in Matthew’s Gospel known as “the Sermon on the Mount”.

Lizzie spent a month in the spring of 2002 working on the photographs and documenting her progress. These pages show the final images she chose.
