On 20th July, Mark Stroman was executed by lethal injection in Texas for the post-9/11 ‘revenge killings’ of Vasudev Patel and Waqar Hasan, targeted because Stroman assumed them to be Middle Eastern (Patel was from India, Hasan from Pakistan). The lone survivor of the shootings, Rais Bhuiyan, a devout Muslim, campaigned for Mark Stroman’s execution to be stopped, motivated by his own religious conviction that he should forgive Stroman. The Texas courts refused to give Bhuiyan permission to meet Stroman to forgive him in person.
