Saturday Blues

11/04/09 | Posted by ellen

When my Dad died a few years ago the time immediately after his death was really difficult. He had been ill for only a month and much of that time was spent looking after him and my mother – making sure they were ok, cooking meals, dealing with visitors and other domestic duties. The day after he died I was left in a void. I had an almost overwhelming sense of loss. I didn’t know what to do with myself.
This is what the disciples must have felt the day after Jesus died. He was gone. Everything they had lived for had gone. What was their life going to be like now?

Holy Saturday is that strange day between the terrible events of Good Friday and the great hope of Easter Sunday. At least we know what is going to happen next – tomorrow will be a celebration of Jesus resurrection and we will be eating vast amounts of egg shaped chocolate fancies. But the disciples on that first terrible Saturday must have felt gutted. The loss must have been devastating.

They had given up their lives to follow this man from Galilee – the man they truly believed was the Messiah - and he was dead. Gone. They must have wondered what life would hold for them now…should they go back to their old lives? Stay in the city and get new jobs? Settle down and start families? Or where they going to continue to trust that God would reveal to them what was going to happen next?

I wonder what they talked about that first Saturday without Jesus…
I wonder what they did with their time…
I wonder how they kept their spirits up…
I wonder if they still had hope…
