Olympic Torch relay

19/05/12 | Posted by Ian Black

There is a fire about to sweep the nation. Actually there are several over the coming months. The Olympic Torch has landed in Cornwall and is about to make its progress around the country building excitement and enthusiasm for the 2012 London games. In June there will be beacons lit to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Both events are intended to inspire hope and the better side of our nature. Many churches will also be taking part in prayer events to accompany both lights and celebrations.

Last summer another fire was in danger of sweeping the nation as London was burning with riots and looting.  The breakdown in social order which led to this is still being debated and analysed, but the fires of this summer are an opportunity to reflect on the values we want to build our nation on.  As the flame is passed in relay there is an echo of the flame of faith that was passed in previous generations and inspired so much.  It has to be passed on today so that it remains vibrant and a force for good in our communities.

The Olympic Torches are an opportunity to pray for each part of the country as the light passes through.  It is an opportunity to focus on all that brings light to darkness - hope to the despairing, justice for the oppressed, love where there is hatred, faith where there is doubt.  May the light of Christ reinvigorate our lives afresh this summer.

Father we think of Colin a member of our congregation who is carrying the torch on 23 June, he has been such a loyal servant of You, and we ask that you protect, give strength as he carries out this task.

Be with his wife who is quite poorly at present.
