Alex Woinski, family photo
Told to go home, Alex was turned away from his school fancy dress day for coming as Jesus. The reason being that his costume was too distracting – hmmm. Apparently all the other students’ wanted to see the ‘boy dressed as Jesus’, which was “interfering” with normal educational activities. School officials also told Alex that some other students had found his costume offensive.
Wonski said he dressed as Jesus because his friends suggested it – the beard and crown may not be his but the shoulder length hair certainly is. He had been developing an interest in religion by studying Bible scripture in school and he had recently celebrated his Bar Mitzvar with his Catholic mother and Jewish father.
Alex’s chosen representation of Jesus portrays him in a way that would be familiar to most westerners – the white, longhaired hippy dressed in white but in fact Jesus would have looked very different. Why not visit our Faces of Jesus module to see which you think is the most likely likeness?

Good for you, Alex. Maybe next year all your friends might join you in dressing up as Jesus and have a Jesus party like the Elvis parties at the cricket Tests.
