Jack BlackBlack’s not the first, seemingly unlikely, comedian to play Jesus. Back in 1999 Will Ferrell had a brief cameo as Jesus in Superstar, and Steve Coogan also starred as school teacher playing Jesus in Hamlet 2 due for release in the UK in February next year (it was released in the US back in August). All of which got me thinking about various actors who would make a really good, or a really bad Jesus. Who do you think would portray a really good/bad film Jesus and why?

Actors who would play Jesus really badly would be easy: Arnie would probably be top of the list (though that does have a kind of horrible fascination), in close contention with Hugh Grant and Al Pacino. I think actors who would play Jesus well would be harder… he’s have to be early thirties and Middle Eastern (satirical American filmmakers are not the only people who picture Jesus as white!)
I would like to see Viggo
Mortensen play Jesus.
Why Viggo? I think he has a integrity about him and a quiet but strong charisma that would come through in the role…plus he looks great with a beard !

I think Ioan Gruffudd would do Jesus really well (he’s the guy who played Wilberforce in Amazing Grace, Mr Fantastic in the Fantastic Four and Sir Lancelot in King Arthur.) He’d be perfect. Warmth, sense of humour and a great actor who would really get Jesus.
