When an 87 year-old lady Winifred Gregory died last year she left her parish church a substantial sum of money. After much deliberation Father David Buckley and his Uckfield congregation decided to commission a new, modern statue to hang on the church's tower. The winner was a seven foot bronze statue, sculpted by Marcus Cornish, which shows Jesus in modern attire. "Jesus in Jeans", as the statue has quickly become known, not only depicts Christ in Jeans and a T-shirt, but also shows him with short hair and a neatly trimmed beard. More ...

So will swine flu lead to a pandemic with millions dead just like the 1918 Spanish flu or will it be just another health scare? No one seems to know. I have to admit I'm worried as I remember watching 'Survivors' on the TV when I was younger where a group of people stuggle in a post pandemic world. It is worrying. Saturday Blues

When my Dad died a few years ago the time immediately after his death was really difficult. He had been ill for only a month and much of that time was spent looking after him and my mother – making sure they were ok, cooking meals, dealing with visitors and other domestic duties. The day after he died I was left in a void. I had an almost overwhelming sense of loss. I didn’t know what to do with myself.

It's nearly two o'clock in the morning, and I'm struggling to keep my eyelids open. I'm awake for a reason. On this night Christians remember something that happened in the small hours just before Jesus' arrest. Before the soldiers came to get him, Jesus went out to an olive garden on the edge of the city, a garden known as Gethsemane. Knowing what was about to happen, and getting very agitated, he said to his friends, "I'm hurting to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." More ...

Holy Week

This week is holy week…the last week of lent. So, on Saturday all those things we gave up for lent can begin again. At the start of lent I asked the question – what are you giving up for lent? I also mentioned that this year rather then focusing on giving something up I had decided to start something up – walking to work. I can report that most days I have managed to keep my lent promise (a few particularly unpleasant days meant that I gave in an got the bus). So, as lent comes to an end I wonder how you have got on? I saw an accident today. As I stood waiting for my youngest to come out of school, a group of children ran past us shouting and laughing and then one of them was lying flat out on the floor and not moving. Two parents went over straight away to see if the girl was conscious and there was horrible couple of minutes when she didn’t respond. More ...

Film Review: Knowing
Of all the titles that Jesus was known by during his time on earth, "prophet" was perhaps more widely used than anything else. The crowds, the woman at the well, the Pharisees, the disciples and even Jesus himself all used the term. Yet it's one of the descriptions that we're perhaps least comfortable with today.
