I've gone back to college after a long break and it is tough right now. The change to my routine as I try and study is really hard. I thought I was good with change but apparently not and the emotional trauma of buying a new pencil case had to be seen to be believed. Why is change so hard? More ...

Michael Moore knows a thing or two about grabbing a headlines. Having pestered Charlton Heston over gun control in Bowling for Columbine and flown flown 9/11 fireman let down by US healthcare to Cuba in Sicko, he's made a controversial statement in the lead up to his next movie, Capitalism: A Love Story. This week thousands of people have made a pilgrimage to see a casket that contains the bones of a young woman who died less that 100 years ago aged 24. She didn't do anything spectacular in her life yet she was described by Pope Pius X as "the greatest saint of modern times". Can ordinary by saintly? More ...

The Virgo personality is what one would call a details person. They will see the slightest thing out of place and seek to run an orderly, logical and well-planned life. They also are strongly concerned with health and hygiene. But if this was a trait seen in Jesus as a healer it was also very much in evidence in the Pharisees who often opposed Jesus in those very acts of healing because he broke what they saw as God’s rules. So how might people like this give their talents in the service of others but avoid becoming rule-bound at the same time? More ...

The Lion is the traditional animal that symbolizes Mark’s Gospel. It is also very common as an animal chosen in heraldry to represent royalty. Jesus spoke much of a kingdom that would come on earth that he was ruler over. The image of Jesus as King sounds potentially authoritarian in an age when monarchs are often ceremonial figureheads and we expect to elect our leaders. Yet we recognise some people as being ‘born leaders’. This would be true of the Leo Personality and was true of Jesus, but what kind of leader are we talking about? More ...

Watching the news pictures of coffins being carried by soldiers with all due ceremony down the ramp of a cargo plane just back from Afghanistan made me think hard about how we remember our dead. I walk past a graveyard everyday on my way to work and there are all sorts of gravestones and flowers and ornaments. How should we remember our dead, especially when they are so young? More ...

Perhaps the most famous of the hidden gospels is the Gospel of Thomas. We've known about it ever since it was written, but it has only been more recently when we discovered what it actually said. In 1945 a copy of Thomas' Gospel turned up in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, amongst a collection of other ancient documents, and closer study revealed that a few fragments from it had already been found 50 years earlier. More ...

I wanted to write about Michael Jackson but perhaps it is too early with reports and revelations daily. I grew up with his music. I remember the comic strip TV programme of the 1970s and later on dancing to his music at the school and college discos. I've been thinking alot about my childhood and in a quiet way mourning someone who was part of it. More ...

You know how it is. No conversations or discussions or books about a subject and then that is all anyone seems to want to talk about. That is how it has been with angels recently. Maybe they are like buses, don't see one for ages then three come along at once.... More ...
