How Would Jesus Vote?

12/04/10 | Posted by MattPage | Permalink | (0) Comments

So the election has been called for May 6th and the next few weeks will see the airwaves thick with clichéd slogans, billboards festooned with glossy posters and armies of canvassers interrupting peaceful evenings. But is there anything worth voting for, and how would a certain preacher from Galilee have acted if he found himself (somewhat bizarrely) in our shoes today? More ...

What do I do?

It is really tough when, as a parent, you see your child bullied at school. Two of mine have had real problems with this and, as a Christian, I really struggle. On one hand I am tasked with loving my neighbour and turning the other cheek. On the other Jesus was known for valuing children. It is difficult to know what to do when it is my child that is being thrown across a room or punched in the stomach. More ...

Don’t laugh, Jesus went by Donkey

28/03/10 | Posted by MattPage | Permalink | (0) Comments

Said a supposedly humorous car sticker from the 80s, and today is the day that people celebrate the memory of Jesus’ most famous road trip - his journey into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. The symbolism of Jesus’ mode of transport is largely lost on us today. Almost no-one in the west travels on animals today, let alone going by donkey, and even in the middle east donkeys tend to be used to carry goods rather than passengers. More ...

The last taboo?

We aren't that festive in the Poppy household at the moment as someone close to us if very ill. Every time the phone goes I'm expecting bad news and it seems to be a particularily bad time of year to be in this situation as the last taboo for converstaion seems to be even more strongly observed now than at any other time of year. He’s Alive!

The first person to meet Jesus that first Easter morning was Mary…the tomb, which had been guarded by Roman soldiers, was empty and she was heartbroken – who had taken Jesus? Where was he? But then there he was. She had thought he was the gardener but then she realised it really was Jesus, standing there in front of her. Jesus is Alive! More ...

Saturday Blues

When my Dad died a few years ago the time immediately after his death was really difficult. He had been ill for only a month and much of that time was spent looking after him and my mother – making sure they were ok, cooking meals, dealing with visitors and other domestic duties. The day after he died I was left in a void. I had an almost overwhelming sense of loss. I didn’t know what to do with myself.
This is what the disciples must have felt the day after Jesus died. He was gone. Everything they had lived for had gone. What was their life going to be like now? More ...

This is compassion

It's nearly two o'clock in the morning, and I'm struggling to keep my eyelids open. I'm awake for a reason. On this night Christians remember something that happened in the small hours just before Jesus' arrest. Before the soldiers came to get him, Jesus went out to an olive garden on the edge of the city, a garden known as Gethsemane. Knowing what was about to happen, and getting very agitated, he said to his friends, "I'm hurting to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." More ...

Holy Week

08/04/09 | Posted by ellen | Permalink | (2) Comments

This week is holy week…the last week of lent. So, on Saturday all those things we gave up for lent can begin again. At the start of lent I asked the question – what are you giving up for lent? I also mentioned that this year rather then focusing on giving something up I had decided to start something up – walking to work. I can report that most days I have managed to keep my lent promise (a few particularly unpleasant days meant that I gave in an got the bus). So, as lent comes to an end I wonder how you have got on? Did you see what happened?

I saw an accident today. As I stood waiting for my youngest to come out of school, a group of children ran past us shouting and laughing and then one of them was lying flat out on the floor and not moving. Two parents went over straight away to see if the girl was conscious and there was horrible couple of minutes when she didn’t respond. More ...
