The last taboo?

12/12/09 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (6) Comments

We aren't that festive in the Poppy household at the moment as someone close to us if very ill. Every time the phone goes I'm expecting bad news and it seems to be a particularily bad time of year to be in this situation as the last taboo for converstaion seems to be even more strongly observed now than at any other time of year. He’s Alive!

The first person to meet Jesus that first Easter morning was Mary…the tomb, which had been guarded by Roman soldiers, was empty and she was heartbroken – who had taken Jesus? Where was he? But then there he was. She had thought he was the gardener but then she realised it really was Jesus, standing there in front of her. Jesus is Alive! More ...

Saturday Blues

When my Dad died a few years ago the time immediately after his death was really difficult. He had been ill for only a month and much of that time was spent looking after him and my mother – making sure they were ok, cooking meals, dealing with visitors and other domestic duties. The day after he died I was left in a void. I had an almost overwhelming sense of loss. I didn’t know what to do with myself.
This is what the disciples must have felt the day after Jesus died. He was gone. Everything they had lived for had gone. What was their life going to be like now? More ...

This is compassion

It's nearly two o'clock in the morning, and I'm struggling to keep my eyelids open. I'm awake for a reason. On this night Christians remember something that happened in the small hours just before Jesus' arrest. Before the soldiers came to get him, Jesus went out to an olive garden on the edge of the city, a garden known as Gethsemane. Knowing what was about to happen, and getting very agitated, he said to his friends, "I'm hurting to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." More ...

Holy Week

This week is holy week…the last week of lent. So, on Saturday all those things we gave up for lent can begin again. At the start of lent I asked the question – what are you giving up for lent? I also mentioned that this year rather then focusing on giving something up I had decided to start something up – walking to work. I can report that most days I have managed to keep my lent promise (a few particularly unpleasant days meant that I gave in an got the bus). So, as lent comes to an end I wonder how you have got on? Did you see what happened?

I saw an accident today. As I stood waiting for my youngest to come out of school, a group of children ran past us shouting and laughing and then one of them was lying flat out on the floor and not moving. Two parents went over straight away to see if the girl was conscious and there was horrible couple of minutes when she didn’t respond. More ...

Doctor Who and Jesus – 4 – New New New New Earth

07/03/09 | Posted by Andrew Wooding | Permalink | (0) Comments

The upcoming Doctor Who Easter special - (what is it with Doctor Who always coming back at Easter?) - promises to be a fun romp, with a London double decker bus plonked in the middle of a desert, a guest turn from comedian Lee Evans, former Eastender and Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan as the Doctor’s one-off companion, plus the involvement of UNIT, the Doctor’s soldier colleagues that go all the way back to his time as Doctor number two. The special is called Planet of the Dead … but which planet, and who’s dead? No idea! But while we’re waiting for this Easter extravaganza, maybe we could revisit another story where David Tennant’s Doctor landed on a planet of the dead. More ...

What have you given up for lent?

03/03/09 | Posted by ellen | Permalink | (8) Comments

It seems that everyone around me has given something up for lent – the most popular being chocolate, wine, bread, cake, swearing and this year’s favourite facebook – it got me wondering why on earth we put ourselves through this annual 40 day fast and what does it all means? More ...

Behind the Story

24/12/08 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (2) Comments

As someone who nearly gave birth to a baby on the motorway I’ve had a real affinity with Mary. It makes a good story later, as both mother and baby are fine, but at the time it wasn’t funny. More ...
