Halloween fun?

29/10/09 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (5) Comments

It is that time of year again when small children turn up at the front door demanding sweets and chocolate. I will have my door firmly shut on Saturday. Is this because I'm a Christian or just a grumpy old woman? More ...

All Change…

18/10/09 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (0) Comments

I've gone back to college after a long break and it is tough right now. The change to my routine as I try and study is really hard. I thought I was good with change but apparently not and the emotional trauma of buying a new pencil case had to be seen to be believed. Why is change so hard? More ...

The Invention of Jesus

Film Review: The Invention of Lying
Jesus once said “Let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no” (Matt 5:17). It’s one of those sayings that, taken absolutely literally, no-one really follows to the letter, even if it does motivate many to be more truthful.

Nonetheless, Ricky Gervais’s new film, The Invention of Lying, examines what it would be like if we lived in a world where people spoke the truth, or at least their perception of it, at all times. Colleagues constantly highlight your failings, strangers express their disgust at your physical appearance and residential care for the elderly is called “A Sad Place for Hopeless Old People”. Capitalism is “Anti-Jesus”

Michael Moore knows a thing or two about grabbing a headlines. Having pestered Charlton Heston over gun control in Bowling for Columbine and flown flown 9/11 fireman let down by US healthcare to Cuba in Sicko, he's made a controversial statement in the lead up to his next movie, Capitalism: A Love Story. Meeting a Saint

30/09/09 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (0) Comments

This week thousands of people have made a pilgrimage to see a casket that contains the bones of a young woman who died less that 100 years ago aged 24. She didn't do anything spectacular in her life yet she was described by Pope Pius X as "the greatest saint of modern times". Can ordinary by saintly? More ...

The Hidden Gospels - Part 5: Gospel of Judas

24/09/09 | Posted by MattPage | Permalink | (0) Comments

Judas is an unusual historical figure. For the last 2000 years he has been considered the most hated man in history, yet we know almost nothing about him. Even the manner of his death is disputed. Matthew’s gospel has him die by his own hand. Acts finds him falling over in a field and bursting his intestines. Some historians even suggest that Judas never actually existed. More ...

Jesus in the NHS

I've been on holiday for a few weeks and part of my time away was spent in A & E (ER in the States) when I badly twisted my foot. Whilst I was away I missed out on all the fuss about the reforms of the American Healthcare system and the criticism of the NHS that followed but from my experience the NHS has a lot going for it when you have an accident! Jaycee

It seems that a young girl was kidnapped and then appears eighteen years later and has been living in a tent in a garden with two children fathered by the alleged kidnapper. My first reaction when I heard the story was 'Lord have mercy' but it was followed very shortly by the question 'where were the neighbours?' More ...

Jesus – the Virgo personality

23/08/09 | Posted by Steve Hollinghurst | Permalink | (2) Comments

The Virgo personality is what one would call a details person. They will see the slightest thing out of place and seek to run an orderly, logical and well-planned life. They also are strongly concerned with health and hygiene. But if this was a trait seen in Jesus as a healer it was also very much in evidence in the Pharisees who often opposed Jesus in those very acts of healing because he broke what they saw as God’s rules. So how might people like this give their talents in the service of others but avoid becoming rule-bound at the same time? More ...

Shouting at Nice People who Work for the Council can Damage Your Health

07/08/09 | Posted by Poppy | Permalink | (3) Comments

That isn’t the snappiest title I’ve ever come up with but I’m fed up with people being angry. I work in local government and dealing with tantrums and hissy fits is something I deal with every day. I've heard every excuse under the sun for why people are angry but it doesn't stop them having a go at yours truely. More ...
