In the last month, the Church of England's two most senior bishops have both spoken out on the issue of poverty in the UK. Rowan Williams' piece in the New Statesman grabbed all the headlines a few weeks ago, but last week also saw the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, tackling the issue in Friday's Guardian. It's the shortest verse in the whole Bible and occasionally some people even use it to swear, but there's no doubt that John 11:35 - "Jesus wept." - is an odd little verse. According to the gospels, by this point in his ministry Jesus has already brought two people back from the dead and seems to know that he's about to do something similar. Easter is always the time of year when the TV channels figure they should stick out a bit of religious programming and this year proved no exception. There was Anne Widdecombe pondering the future of Christinanity, Rowan Williams wondering about the point of forgiveness, an ITV documentary on the flight of faith and the movies The Prince of Egypt and Barabbas on the BBC and Channel 5 . But arguably the biggest piece of religious programming this year was BBC1's two-part documentary The Story of Jesus. More ...
